Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18 on the 18th of July 1994. She also grew up in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. [1][2] Russell was born to an African-American father and a white mother, is biracial, and grew up with her mother's side of the family. She told me that as a young girl she was not accepted by her peers due to the colour of her skin. [3] Her parents struggled with financial issues. They were always moving and relocated 16 times to help support their father's work. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there was always a chance for reinventing yourself, creating something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically inclined, at first, she wanted to pursue a career in ballet, and later become a painter. Russell was 18 when she started her first acting class. She used the money she earned from work to purchase an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. After her money ran out she would work until she had enough money to make another attempt at auditioning. It went on for four consecutive years, until she finally secured her first major television role.
