Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public talker. Feminist Frequency is a website which hosts video and commentary analysing portrayals women in the media and in popular media and popular. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. She was the co-creator and director-executive of Feminist Frequency an educational not-for-profit website that focuses on the role of women within popular culture narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes about women and pop culture she also works on issues related to the targeted harassment of women as well as other classes of people in the online space. Holding a master's degree in politics and sociology from York University Sarkeesian is also popular as a public speaking engagement and has given keynote speeches at TEDxWomen's Women XOXO Festival and also the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She has been interested in feminist issues, gender and gender equality since the age of a child. In 2009, while she was still studying at a university, Sarkeesian founded the site Feminist Frequency. She was launching a series of videos on the web that looked at game's gender-based representations and was the target of harassment online. The incident did not deter her, rather it bolstered her determination as a feminist critic of media. Her many notable contributions in the field of feminists were recognized by a variety of awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and founded Feminist Frequency, an non-profit educational organization that studies the representation of women in pop culture.
